Pakistan Pumps
A number of tender notices were issued for pumps in Pakistan by KPK’s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government, sources confirmed on Thursday. The KPK government has been conducting multiple tenders to improve water and infrastructure supplies in Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, including one for pump storage in tribal areas. A tender notice for pumping stations was also issued on Thursday, offering a possible opportunity to pump water into rivers and groundwater resources across parts of Pakistan where access to drinking water is still a major issue.
Pumping stations use large-scale pumping machines to move water from one place to another, from a reservoir or into an aquifer for instance. Such stations are typically used when groundwater sources need to be purified and can also play a role in combating drought and reducing flood risks. They are often built near rivers, which can serve as an easy source of water for hydroelectric dams that generate electricity for local communities. Pakistan currently has thousands of micro hydroelectric power plants, according to a World Bank report on micro grids in Asia Pacific regions. However, these small systems don’t always have an easily accessible source of water at their disposal – sometimes because they’re located in dry regions with few surface bodies of water available or due to naturally low levels underground.
